Blog Post #3 This week in the progression of my new occupation I found that there is a lot more detail work than I quite remember during my initial time participating in pottery. I think that I can attribute this to the fact that when I first learned the craft of ceramics it was during a high school class where there were a group of us sitting at one table with consistent time set aside each week for our projects. If I am remembering correctly, we had about an hour and a half two days a week that we had to work on our current project and specific deadlines to meet, as there were multiple required pieces to be turned in throughout the semester. Looking back, I think this provided a small sense of urgency but also created important specific time that could not easily be overlooked or skipped. When working on my project this last week, (which I am still doing in my living room) I was surprised at how long it is taking me to get the correct shap...

Blog #2 When we were first told to pick an occupation that we would be exploring and developing in this semester, I had a few options that came to mind. There were more than one I found compelling and thought I would enjoy doing every week. In the end I landed on pottery for a multitude of reasons. First I want to dive deeper into my self identity which is constructed through my own perception of myself along with how society has influenced me. I know from my past experience in pottery that I enjoy working with my hands and creating art from a blank beginning. The societal aspect of my self identity in this occupation is a bit more complex. My grandmother is an artist and has made a career out of her love fore creating. She makes beautiful jewelry, sculptures, paintings, and more. One form of art she has truly loved her whole life is ceramics, she even taught it in high schools for some time, and when I first did ceramics years ago she was delighted to shar...

As I began my new occupation I started with feelings of excitement as I got to reflect on my past experiences with it. I took pottery classes in highschool and they are some of my fondest memories, not nescarrily because of the instructor or the time spent in class yet due to the actual act of creating. I know that I get great satisfaction and feelings of accomplishment when I use my hands especially if the end result is that I have created something. My grandmother is an artist and has made her entire career by creating with her hands. One of her forms of art throughout her life has been pottery so sharing that with her special and an influence for my want to learn the craft. Moving from my feelings of nostalgia and going into my current experience, I felt as though I was starting from scratch in many ways. Although I have a foundational understanding of the steps and techniques, the fine details that make up so much of creating pieces seems to have evaded me. I began the process by g...
